Make Career In Criminology

Over the past few years criminal justice has emerged as one of the broad fields in the United States that encompasses many functions in society's efforts to control crime. It is one of the few professions that have constantly demanded well trained specialists, who can enforce laws, prosecute and rehabilitate adult and immature offenders, assist victims, and prevent crime from occurring through successful security and deterrence. Consequently, in last few years the demand for criminal justice programs has boomed drastically. It is one of the few degrees that can start or advance your career in this exciting field by qualifying you for diverse profile like: Law Enforcement Officer, Criminal Forensic Specialist or Investigator and Special Agent at the local, state and federal level.

If you are looking for a credible justice school then must not forget to look for its accredited status. It is highly required if your course is transferred to another post-secondary institutions for certification or licensing. Moreover, being a student from accredited schools you can also access to different student aid programs.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that there will be an 11 to 17 percent job growth in the next ten years for all criminal justice careers. An undergraduate degree will typically qualify you for an entry level position. However, a master's degree is usually required to join a specialized justice agency, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Secret Service, the Border Patrol, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

Academically speaking, criminal justice is a field of criminology, the study of crime and its causes. Studies in this degree program usually will include courses in policing, U.S. Court systems, criminal courts, corrections, victimology, police sciences, forensic psychology, juvenile justice, criminal procedure, and criminal law.

The toughest part of the criminal justice system is the corrections system, which you will study after you have learned about the police force and the courts that send people into this system and/or prevent them from going into it. You should hopefully be ready at this point to understand and contemplate what an inmate's life is like and what goes on in the various correctional facilities around the nation. You may even have an opportunity to visit correctional facilities in one or more of your classes.

In order for an individual to succeed to the stage of becoming a detective, the trainee needs to complete their training. Once that is completed, they will then move to the next stage of becoming a police officer. After period of probation and their performance has met or even exceeding what the department expected of them, they will reap the rewards of a promotion. However, the probation period can vary from as little as six month to three years.
